Before you reinstall try this,
Windows XP Repair Installation
At some point you may need to repair the installation of Windows
XP. This is preferable to a clean install in many cases since it
attempts to only repair your copy of windows without having to
delete all the files on your computer first. In many cases a
repair installation is enough to fix the problem. A repair install
deletes the files normally installed by windows XP and then
reinstalls them off the disc. A repair install will not rebuild
your computer's registry, delete applications and user settings,
or fix problems caused being caused by a program.
1. First you have to boot the computer with the Windows XP cd in
the cd tray. You will see a black screen and it will ask you
to press any key to boot from the cd so press the spacebar
and your computer will boot from the CD.
2. After a moment you will be taken to the Windows XP Setup
screen. Though the second option says to repair do not press
R. Instead press enter to select the setup for Windows XP.
3. Next, you have to accept the license agreement from windows.
Once you've done that it will search for your existing
installation of windows.
4. Once it has finished detecting the installation you need to
select the XP installation you want to repair. You can repair
the installation by pressing R. If you don't see the repair
option you will need to do a clean installation. Your version
of windows may have been damaged in a way that it cannot carry
out a repair.
5. Setup will then copy the files it needs to the hard drive and
reboot the computer. A message will come up asking you if you
want to boot from the cd, don't press any keys and just let
the timer run out. The set up will continue and look like is
doing a clean install but all of your applications and
settings will be intact when it finished.
An important note is to not activate your windows over the
internet right away. Always enable the XP firewall to protect
yourself.

Firstly, earlier than you do some thing, BACKUP onto CD or DVD all of your records, track and snap shots/video. You must do that no less than per thirty days in any case. If you possess an iPod or similiar, then you'll be able to use this as an outside tough force to backup your documents. A blank set up is endorsed however keep in mind that you're going to additionally must reinstall all techniques at the present approach - down load the contemporary variation from the internet in case you do not need the disks. Windows XP additionally calls for activation and permitted precise expertise as soon as it is reinstalled - so you're going to require a precise XP serial quantity. When you move to reinstall, you must make a seperate partition to your tough force for records and many others. So you put in XP on "C:" force and make an extra partition "D:". Before you strive some thing, do a little study on the internet with regard to reinstalling hints. If you are living in Melbourne, Australia I can aid you for a small rate. Good good fortune!

1. Are these burned CD's you are attempting to use. If so, they may be crappy ones that are not detected by your computer. Happens to me.
2. Maybe the driver needs to be reinstalled. Try going to the manufacturer's website.
3. As said previously.. try a new CD/DVD drive.
I wouldn't attempt to reinstall Windows because of a DVD drive issue. You should be able to fix this without reinstalling Windows.

No. The only way to install xp without cd is network and that propably is even further away chance. Buy a new cd station? Or loan a usb one from a friend. If you want to save your work a cr-r/rw is a must anyway.

You don't !
Of course you could piece by piece... but thats just plain silly...
Buy or borrow a cd drive.
Don't get used to thinking this setup will be perfect forever... I wipe and reload my system about every 2-3 months... roommates, sheeesh!
That's why you own the disk !

i think i read that the cd isnt recognized, a boot disk would work, but since nobody has floppy disks anymore, restart, before screen come up push f3, or f8, or esc, or shift/f5 (depends on brand), get to configuration screen and reset the "boot order" to cd-hard drive /// if this doesnt work have a friend make you a boot disk (win 95,98,or xp), that will load driver for cd
