Southern hemisphere may be a good option if you look for sun. If you want to experience something special, you may go to Antarctica . Tourist trips start in Ushuaia, Argentina and are only organized November till March. Central America is also OK - the climate is perfect year round (but as many people know this, the resorts may be crowded). For skiing, probably nothing beats the Alps or Rockies. For sightseeing, Southern Europe may be the option - it is neither too hot or too cold (but may be raining, and is certainly not for outdoor swimming) in Spain, Italy or Greece.

I suggest you go to Europe. Since most people go during the summer, summers are always crowded and hectic and you have to wait in long lines to go to museums and stuff. In January it's more relaxed and so you get to see a different side.

I recommend going to Venice, because that's somewhere you don't want to go in the summer. Apparently their sewage goes into the canals, so during the summer it heats up and stinks.

There are a million different places to go, it just depends on what you like to do.
