my friend had those. she said they dont hurt as much as the braces them selves but they are hard to get around when cleaning ur teeth.
Not sure what its called could be a spring. SPRING- placed on the archwire between to brackets in order to push teeth next to the spring apart or pull two teeth together.

Iam sorry to say YES IT HURTS!!!!!!!!!. Trust me i have braces and the hurt.SO BE BRAVE!!!!!!!!
