I have 2 children who never needed a dummy, and I didn't think twice about it.
I think they are disgusting dirty things.
You see children dropping them in the street and the mothers picking them up and sucking them (sorry but this does NOT clean them).
People I know just use dummies to shut their children up. The way I see it is, a child is crying for a reason, and as these people have chosen to have a child and should take more care and responsibility for them, so change their nappy, feed them, give them a cuddle, anything, instead of ramming a piece of latex in their mouths.

well, how to start ? I gave my boys a dummy very early on until they were 18 months, then they gave it to Santa. Now they are 2 and half. They liked it as a comforter during the night. It help young children to feel safe and for that it shouldn't be ban.
But i do understand you. From 3 years old, a child shouldn't have it anymore. I sometimes see in the street 4, 5years old or over children with a dummy, to me it does look a bit stupid, but what worry me is if a child over 3 got in the mouth all the time, it certainly give him trouble with his speech, and bad position of his teeth's. But i do not think that we can do something. The parent should be given information about dummies very early on for them to realise the benefit for babies and the bad things for over 3 years old.

I agree, dummies should be banned if the children are still using them beyond the age of 18 months - 2 years. If a child has their dummy for longer than this it looks disgusting and it makes it even harder to get them off it. The best thing is to have a dummy only for bed!

A pacifier can be helpful and teach some kids how to soothe themselves/calm themselves down when they are little.
Some kids have a blanket they cuddle, others have a toy...whatever works.
That being said, when I see a four year old outside playing with one in her mouth I can hardly stand it.
Giving it to a sick child or a child at bedtime is one thing when they are past infancy. A child old enough for preschool should not be using one during the day time. A kid my son's age still had one when he was 4 and you can hardly understand him when he talks.
Why did he still have it? Mummy and Daddy didn't like to hear him cry and whine for it so they let him keep it. If Grandma hadn't come for a visit I wonder if he would have had it in Kindergarten! (He stopped the habit only the summer before K!)
Ban them over age 3 without a prescription!

I don't think they should be banned, but you are right some mothers do give their kids dummies just to shut them up. I know somebody who has a baby and where ever he goes he has to have his dummy. My son had a dummy to get himself to sleep up until he was about 3 and a half months, then all of a sudden he decided that he preferred his thumb. He only had his dummy to get him off to sleep and as soon as he was gone he would drop it. I'm sure people have the same opinions on thumb sucking as they do non dummies, but I think it is better. He only sucks his thumb to go to sleep.
I get really irritated when I see older kids with dummies and trying to talk whilst holding it in their mouths.

I'm assuming a dummy is what we call a pacifier...and no, I don't think they should be banned. I think that as with anything else, the parents should use their brains and have common sense. I think it's fine to give to a baby, as they have a non-nutritive sucking reflex and it comforts them to do so. I think that by the age of two or three, parents should be weaning the child off the pacifier, because by this age the child is perfectly capable of soothing him or herself in other, more constructive ways. It takes parental involvement and responsibility, to be involved with training and teaching our children. Are we going to ban everything else that is misused? The Internet is misused; are we going to ban that? It's not the object that is the problem; it is the lack of responsibility and common sense of the parents.

They are good for babies as comfort because sucking is a natural thing for them to do. It makes them feel secure. I used to stick my kids dummies in the gripewater bottle before I gave them it. They are also a good indicator for a problem. If a dummy does`nt pacify there could be something wrong that needs medical attention. Five is too old for one though. Should be rid by three or four.

I'm with you on this one, I hate seeing a child of any age with a dummy in their mouth, I breastfed 5 children and NEVER found any need to use a dummy! (nor as someone stated did I have to feed her in the middle of the town!) They also never sucked their thumbs, I hate they way dummys are used to keep a baby quiet rather than giving a cuddle.

I've never heard a pacifier refered to as a "dummie", but they are there for a reason. They are soothing mechanisms and they work, but they can be hard to give up. I think kids over 2 shouldn't have one. The way my mom broke us of our pacifiers was to cut them in half and say they were broken. We cried for a day or two, but we got over it. It doesn't do any lasting damage as long as you break them of it before they get past the age of 2. If you ask me it's better if kids use pacifiers, because the ones who get stuck on thumbs look twice as bad as those with pacifiers. I have seen kids up to age 7 with a thumb in their mouth and you can't just cut up a thumb or throw it away or say the "binky fairy" came and took them away.

I have to agree with you, I think its disgusting when you see a five or six year old walking around with a dummy in their mouth. I'm sorry but that's just not good. My daughter never had a dummy, I didn't give her one, although saying that, when she was about six months old and teething, I thought I would try her with one to see if it helped her, and to my surprise, she was just as disgusted with it and spat it out (lol) So I never went their again.
Dreadful things, and whats even more disgusting is when people suck them and give them back to their child, and sometimes its not even their child, (no, I was having not of that carry on). They harbour germs and not good for the shaping of the teeth.
NO, I'M WITH YOU ON THIS ONE.
