Global warming causes changes in weather patterns, which then changes the path of the jet stream, combined with the melting of the polar ice caps... It all changes the temperature of our oceans, which plankton call home.

When the waters are no longer optimum for their growth and survival, their numbers decline...

the simple answer is the amount of UV rays that are aloud in the earths atmosphere now may kill off them directly while the polar ice caps may change the oceams salinity level and kill them
