I was also going to suggest the 'instant nail polish' Avon makes. It is kind of expensive, but with Avon you can bet it will go on sale or promotion pretty often. I haven't used it but a friend has, and she said it works great by it's not wide enough for her fingernails! you might try going to a place like Ulta, if you have one near you, or a Sally Beauty Supply, where there is a huge variety of nail polish, and talk to them about your situation. Good luck!

you may be able to find out exactly what it is your allergic to by having an allergy test. Lots of cheap nail polishes contain toluene which is a common irritant, but you can get lots of polishes without it in. Visit a beautician, who may have come accross this problem before.

Have you tried tippex as a base(I know it's white) but then if you get some felt tips the ones with a brush tip you can paint any pattern on them, I bet they look nice.

i use sharpies sometimes when i'm bored at work, they work surprisingly well, especially if you do a couple of coats and let dry thouroughly. they come in all sorts of colors, and they let you make designs on your nails way easier since they're pointed. they actually recomended this for a quick fix in a jane magazine once.
hope my silly habit works for you!
