i had my kid crying about an hour ago because she heard about hell today .. she is only 5
it is a horrible thing to tell kids
what i cant figure out though is ... if it is a place where we burn in a fiery pit for eternity ...
wouldn't we have to be physical beings for this to happen .. what with the oxygen etc to burn ?
and even so .. wouldn't we just burn up immediately ?

No, there are dumber concepts than that in monotheism. What about these:
Sunni Muslims believe that an anti-christ called the dajjal is going to ride a donkey that measures 40 cubits (about 80 feet) from ear to ear around the world, then be slain by Essa (Jesus) who will then get married and live happily ever after.
Christians (at least those who believe the book of Revelations describes future events) believe that god will liberate all the inhabitants of hell, pass judgement on them (how they got there in the first place without a judgement is one of those divine mysteries) and then he will throw hell into a lake of fire.
Jews: don't get me started on the Jews, who started all this nonsense, with Jonah and the fish, Noah's ark, etc etc.

With no disrespect Hell is a place cast aside for non believers. THe Hell that we have all heard of growing up with fire and brimstone is for Satan, not humans. Hell is a dark void where non believers souls will spend eternity in darkness, knowing that they will never be with Jesus. This will cause great depression.
To a reponse to fake_pierce's answer. All those people you mentioned will be allowed into HEaven if they ask the Father for forgiveness and Repent, along with excepting Jesus Christ as there savior.

Your mistake lies in the fact that you used the words "your own children" to speak of all humans as though they were already God's children this is wrong. Unless you have been born again you are not God's children in the first place.

OK,
You teach your child not to jump out a window 10 stories high.
You tell them imminent death is the result.
They one day they do this very thing. Did you make them jump?
Of course not. You told them the danger and the result, you did all you could to keep them from doing this awful action.
Hell is real, and God does not throw us into the Lake of Fire, we choose to "jump in". We are told the danger and the result, it is up to us not to choose to do this.

God does not do that to His children, only the sinful creatures that refuse to believe that Jesus Christ is the only one who can save them from all their sins. If you never become His child, you will remain His sinful creature and go to hell because you never became His child.
Jesus Christ Is the One and Only Way To Heaven!
In The Holy Bible, “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 14:6. He meant “I am the only way to God the Father and to heaven”, “I am the only truth that you need to know.” and “I am the only spiritual life available to mankind.” In other words, “I am the only true and living God.”
All other so-called gods are false gods. They are not real. They do not exist. Satan creates counterfeit gods, religions and faith in them. They appear to be the genuine articles but they are false. They are phony. They are bogus. No other so-called god has the power to forgive, cleanse and remove all your sins from you to get you to heaven. They don't even claim to.
I pray you will believe this and accept the fact that you are a sinner needing to be saved from your sins (“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” Romans 3:23, The Holy Bible.) and accept the fact that the blood Jesus Christ shed for you at Calvary is the only way you can have your sins forgiven, cleansed and removed and is the only way you can get to heaven. I pray you will acknowledge that you are a sinner and ask Jesus Christ to forgive, cleanse and remove all you sins and accept Him into your heart/life to live for Him the rest of your life. (“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:” John 1:12, in the Holy Bible.) That is what it means to be born again. (“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3 in The Holy Bible.) Salvation is a free gift. You cannot work for it. You cannot be good enough to earn it. You must, by faith, receive it as a free gift. (“8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9Not of works, lest any man should boast.”) Ephesians 2:8-9.
God loves you and it is not His will that you perish in hell.
(“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” II Peter 3:9 in The Holy bible.)

I don't think it's dumb because it's scared people into following a religion for many, many years now.
I think it's a silly concept but it's worked like they wanted it to.

I do. My gods/goddesses are not so heartless. If you do not learn how to live without harming others, you come back to try again. They do not expect every one to get it all right in their first life.
