A GIF is a picture format that can hold multiple frames, thus creating a slideshow or animation. GIF stands for "Graphic Interchange Format". Gifs can hold only 256 colors though, so when saving a single image, use BMP or JPG.

GIF is a compressed format of a graphic. If you export an image to gif format from an image editor, it reduces the size, quality and colors in the image. But it allows transperancy in the image, so that background elements can be seen in the transparent area. It also can contain animation. Photoshop is a great tool for gif animation. JPEG format supports neither transparancy nor animation.
