Does anyone ever wonder why so many people (celebrities especially) insist upon adopting a child from a country other than the one in which they live? Madonna lives in England. Aren't there poor, sad (but hopeful!) children in London and other parts of England waiting to be adopted? There certainly are PLENTY of children in the US who need homes.

It really has me wondering if they even WANT to adopt a child, or if they're simply doing it (as so many of the respondents have said) for publicity. People should adopt a child because they really want one to love and take care of and raise properly--not to get a few notches higher up on the totem pole. It's sick and wrong to do it for any reason other than love.

I think its a combination of two things:
a) It is "trendy" thing to do. It's sad to say that, but I think celebrities perceive it like that. Angelina and Brad did it...."why not Madonna?"
b) I think you are more under the microscope when you adopt in your home country.
I do agree with you about the US. The kids who don't get adopted in the US have problems (drugs, abandonment, etc), but like you said - they still need to be loved.
Good question.

Madonna had completed her home study, she knew she wanted a child. When in Africa on a charity mission she met and fell in love with this new child. There was a connection there. She has brought the child home and will be monitored for 18 months before completing the adoption. I have considered volunteering overseas, but have not for this very reason, I am afraid that I will bring home children!

Personally I think it is for publicity. They probably think that by adopting from other countries it will be talked about more. I think it would be a really good idea to adopt where they live but they are celebrities and they will do anything for publicity.

I'm no fan of Madonna's but I really don't get why people are criticizing her so much. The reason is probably that we have stricter laws and a better possibility of a birth parent popping up later.

Well that is a good question. The answer is simple if you look at the news and paid attention to the surrondings of the place where the madonna kid was adopted from.US and UK kids will not have it as hard as those kids.

despite what they may say, i believe a lot of it is for publicity. it's wonderful that they adopt, don't get me wrong... and to help children who probably have it worse in the orphanages in 3rd world countries is fabulous. but i still think a lot of it with celebrities at least is publicity.

this gives them publicity to adopt a foreign child. It sounds much more nobler to adopt from a foreign country versus your home country

But the laws are a bit stricter and then they can do what they want (especially in light of the subterfuge Madonna pulled)

I think it makes them look better if they adopt a child from a country that is more well known to have orphans and such
