Take a piece of sand paper and staple it to a piece of plywood. set a piece of lunch meat on the ground and cover it with the sandpaper board, sandpaper side up. Get the dog really excited to have a snack, and let him dig on the sandpaper. It will file the nails down quickly. Once you do this on the fronts, you still have to figure out something for the back, but at least half is done.

take him to a vet or groomer that knows what they're doing. i was told that dogs have nerve endings near their nails that can make cutting them very dangerous if you get too close, especially because the dog can't be very still. basically if you see blood after cutting the nail your dog's in trouble!!! so dont take any chances and have it done the next time you take him to the vet for shots, cleaning, etc. you can also find a grooming service that will come to you. my mom had that done for our dog when she got too old to be in the car. they gave her a bath and everything right outside the house on the curb in the back of their van. quick, easy, and inexpensive. plus vet's can give them a safe sleep medicine if they need to calm them down to do it. also, for that they say the best time to do it is under anesthia during teeth cleanings.

Chamomile tea works very well, and is safe for him.
Dump it out of the teabag, and use 1 teaspoon for small breed, up to 1 tablespoon for a large breed. Mix it in a little canned food, such as Mighty Dog, or Cesar's, and give about 30 minutes before he needs to relax. It will keep him happy, but reduce stress. It can be given as needed. You will find chamomile at your grocer's, in the tea section.
I use this for nail clipping..However, after you have them clipped, then you can maintain them, using the broad emory boards that are made for acrylic nails..just the dollar store ones are fine..and when you are sitting in the evenings, handle his feet as part of cuddling..Gradually begin to file his nails as well, all as a part of your quiet cuddly time..

The best way to trim dogs nails is to find a quiet road (no traffic) and spend 15 Min's throwing a rubber ball for the dog to fetch. Tarmac roads are best, the nails get trimmed the dog has fun and the bonus is it keeps the dog fit.

I had a dalmation and they are much more fidgety. One of the first words she learnt from us is 'Keep Still!' which came in very handy when I needed to clip her nails. It is said in a friendly, frustrated tone and with lots of surprised praise when she complies.

Taken slowly, with lots of praise and consideration (its like the dentist would be for us) clipping nails is do-able, but it would be easier on you (if not the dog) to have it done at the vet.

put a plank in the back yard with sand paper glued to it against a wall like a very steep ramp , make sure it's tall enough to make him use several attempts to reach the top , put treats at the top and he will wear his nails down trying to scramble up it .

A day chasing balls around a concrete car park would probably work as well

If you don't want to spend the money by taking him to a groomer then you could just wait until he's sleeping and then try to cut them. You'll have to do it when he's in a heavy sleep, not just a cat nap otherwise he'll wake up right away.

I have to have my dogs done at the vet. Try calling a local groomer too and see how much they might charge for it. Sometimes it's wortth it to just pay to have it done. Good Luck!

Take him to either a vet or reputable groomer. Also try walking him on hard ground as this will wear them down.

Agreed, take him to the vet or to the groomer. They can do it quick because they have a lot of practice. Trying to do it yourself just stresses everyone out :(
