Is it mentally safe to travel with mental illness? I mean, is it wrong to get out of your daily routine and environment and try to have fun while being away? I have the opportunity to go out west and discover things like the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, etc. I'm just worried that I'll have some kind of melt-down because of it. I'm scared that I'll be away from my doctor and therapist's care for 3 weeks. I'm pretty unstable emotionally and mentally but part of me still believes that the trip would be really fun! I'm not going alone, I'll have friends with me. I'm just scared that I'll be stuck out in the middle of nowhere (Redwood Forest?) and end up in some po-dunk town with an ancient mental hospital and they'll keep me for months. Are my fears unfounded? Has anybody else had these fears?

My therapist and I have discussed this. He says that sometimes it's good to change and experience other things. 3 weeks without seeing a therapist is not going to "kill you". talk to your therapist and see if he thinks it might be possible to do some phone counseling or at least he can call you and check in on you. My therapist does that when I am out of town. You can't live in a Little shell and never leave the house. Life goes on.If your friends are aware of your health, let them help you. You would be amazed how much going out and having fun can improve your mental health. Visiting with friends can improve your mental health.i saw a friend 2 weeks ago and the last 2 weeks I have felt "wonderful". It's normal to be scared when you are stepping into new territory but just don't worry about it. Think about the good time you will have and let all your concerns go. Hope this helps

Good for you for trying to live instead of just survive with your illness. I think that you should have a backup plan incase the worst should happen, but otherwise it should be a go. The vacation should be a positive and fun experience and should help you with your illness. Here are some suggestions, ask your therapist for a phone session while you are gone. Ask your doctor/therapist to work with you on an emergency plan just in case. People don't plan to fail, they fail to plan. For a lot of people just having a back up plan can make all of the difference in the world. Remember to have fun and to be safe.

You would want to talk to your doctors about this. The travelling to get there is stressful - especially if you go by air. That is enough to cause a meltdown right there. I just about missed my plane this year because of a security clampdown. That caused me no end of stress and I am not one given to mental illness.
Getting out of the regular routine is not bad if you can do it. Being put into some small town hospital is certainly a concern. If you asked to be transferred to a larger centre, they would need to do that.

It could be very good for you. You are worrying about nothing. Just go. If something did happen, you would be okay until you reached a town that had a good mental clinic. You're not going to be alone. Go and have fun.

It certainly depends on your mental issue. And you should check with your doctor and get that view and the view of your therapist.

It's all you. You have trapped yourself in a prison that you don't want to get out of. Why would you have a mental breakdown?

Don't be a self-fulfilled prophecy (if you believe it will happen, it will). If you don't believe it will happen, it won't.

Up to you.
