The older I get, the more I realize people's lives are filled with business and stress that I can't begin to understand. I live alone without children, so I can return a call pronto most of the time. However, most of my friends have kids and much busier lives than I do, so sometimes it's a few days before I hear back. Depending on a person's job, they may not want to talk to ANYONE (friend or enemy) after work, so you have to be patient.

If it's important (really important), call twice, indicate it's important and leave it at that. Leave a detailed message if you want; that way the person will know what it's about. Again, I can't stress enough that people's lives are crazy and they mean no disrespect; they are just too tired.

It took me a long time to accept this and I too used to go crazy--it's not worth it.

As for a business, it depends on the nature of the business. If you are a customer, leave a detailed message, wait 24 hours and call again. Keep a record of the date and time of your calls and who you left the message with. Always ask for names. Messages can get lost in offices.

If it's a government office be careful and polite, but persistent. I would call every two days until I got my problem resolved. Again, remind them politely that you've called on October 20 at 4:00, October 23 at 3:00, etc.

If it's a doctor I would call every day until I got what I needed, again diarizing the attempts to reach them. I'd be shocked if my doctor didn't call me at the end of the same business day.

Again, try not to take it personally. We can have no idea what's going on in other people's lives and places of business.

Good luck!

If it is IMPORTANT, you keep calling until they answer. Something urgent just can't wait... If it is not really that important, two calls is enough. If they do not call you back, and it is a close relative or a really good friend, you should go over and see if something is wrong...!!! They may have had an accident or something worse. Anyother calls that are not returned after the second call is a clear message they do not want to talk to you.

24 hours is the proper timeframe to return a persons calls. With a doc though, is it urgent cause i would be phoning back in 4hours.. I don't like to wait but at the same time I know that peoples lives are also very busy. Friends can be called back sooner than a business..

Nothing unless it takes them a year to respond; just kidding. You have to know the phone habits of the person you are calling, some friends are immediate respond some take 24 hours, some take a couple of days. I think 3 days is pushing it.
BUT, it also depends on the urgency of your call and how much importance you express an immediate response. and take into consideration their phone habits.
All business calls must be returned within 24 hours, that's professionalism.

Did you leave a message? If it is something that is important to you, I would call every day until you get the answer. If you think it is something that is important to them, then just leave a message or two and forget about it.
