The main reason is because 'It is the PROCESS not the PRODUCT that matters'. A model does not promote independence or creativity. Showing the child a model can discourage the child from art because they may feel like they can not do as good as the teacher has done with the model. Therefore, the child will not enjoy the process of art because they feel that their product is inferior. And may develop a distaste for art. Free Art not only promotes creativity but it also promotes independence. Which will help the child later in school when they are responsible for doing projects on their own.

Using models for art projects in young children is not a good idea because if they cannot make their art look just like the model this can be discouraging to the child. We need to allow them to express themselves and use their creativity. I think it is ok if you tell heh we are gonna make a lion today. Put the stuff out and let them go for it. Little children can get frustrated very quickly if their project doesn't turn out like what we have shown them and it also can be damaging to their self esteem if other children say, "Look so and so didn't do it like the teacher showed us." You want a child's confidence to be built up and torn down.

The answer is simple: It's because it's not creative for children. Children need the opportunity to create something themselves. If there is a model involved, it's not giving young children the chance to express creativity.

I think the first answerer missed the point.
I wonder if the asker meant, "Should I show my kids what I want the thing they're making to look like before they begin their art project?"
If that's the case, then I would say don't confine the image of the final project to a single conception of the result. In other words, if the project is to draw a flower, let the kids draw it small, large, pink, blue, plaid, or dotted. Let them paint or use chalk or cut it out of construction paper. Let them be creative, and let them color outside the lines. Or let them draw a striped cow if it makes them happy.

it's too much for a child that young. they first need to learn how to make a decent project. otherwise he/she will go crazy if they have to do a project in 3 days. just keep it simple.

because we don't want our young girls (or boys) thinking that beauty is attained through weighing 99 pounds. Stop the eating disorders and low self-esteem before it grows and gets out of control. Show our children what real people look like and teach them how beauty is not only something on the outside but rather a package deal...i don't want to see my daughters doing drugs, throwing up their food, or starving themselves just because they think they have to look a certain way to be beautiful.
