Have you considered separating the food bowls? We have 2 cats and one of the cats will eat the other's food if we don't separate them.
You may not be able to leave out kitty's food bowl all day with the dogs around. She may have to get used to eating once in the morning and once at night. We do that with our cats and they seem to be fine.
If you are very concerned and want more advice, ask your vet or even the techs at the vet. They may have some good ideas for you, too.
Good for you for adopting the dogs, too!

We have the same problem. Acutually, it's not good for dogs to eat cat food or cat's to eat dog food. They have different nutritional requirements and won't get what they need if eating the wrong kind.
In our house, our cat's food and litter box are in the basement. The box is kept up on an old desk we don't use and the food is kept a distance away from the box up on an old work bench we don't use. Elevating the food and box were the only options we had.
If your cat isn't eating at an elevated level, maybe he/she needs a larger area? Also, try enticing your cat to eat higher with a can of cat food as opposed to the dry stuff. Do this here and there and hopefully he/she will learn to be okay up higher.
My brother in law had a laundry room in his basement and put a kitty door on it... tho he had larger dogs and your JR could get right in.

It won't hurt for them to sneak a little every now and then, but it's not good for them to have on a regular basis. Too much fat and protein.
Why won't your cat eat if you put it up high?
Either put your cat's bowls in a room that the dogs don't have access to, or feed your cat, give it 10-15 minutes to eat and pick up whatever leftovers there are. I don't like freefeeding too much anyway because it can cause cats to get fat.

Cat food is not properly balanced for a dog - and it can give them diarrea..ick! Plus - what is your poor cat getting to eat?
Try putting it up - and teaching your cat to eat it there. Or - maybe put it in another room, block the entrance to that room with a baby gate or something that the dogs can't get through, but the cat can jump over?

I would try feeding your cat when the dogs are out for a walk or such. Soon the cat will get the idea to take advantage of the "special" feeding time, and get right to business as soon as the dogs are out of the picture.

You have to seperate it - there is too much protein in cat food for dogs and it will show in either a weight problem or failing organs. If you have a room where you can cut a hole in the door (basement) put it there. the dogs will eat it if they can reach it

the dogs will never stop...i tried everything I eventually had to pick up my cats dryfood dish since she is just a nibbler..i set it on top of my dryer on a non slip rug so the food wouldn't go everywhere and left the door open to the washer dryer area
it took me a few times of setting her up there when she went looking for her dish but after a while she got the hang of it..she jumps up there with no problem
hope this helps...good luck

Put the cats tray up on a table or higher place. The dogs will not be able to reach it, but I'm sure the cat will find it rather easy to access (as they love to climb and be on elevated areas anyway). Plus he/she won't be harassed by your pups anymore for his/her food.

Keep the dogs out of the room where your cat's food is. It won't do them any harm but it is full of fat and protein so make sure they don't over indulge or they will end up like big barrels!

Yes, its to high in protein and fat. Try placing the cat food out of reach of the dogs.
