Delaroche may be best known today for his painting 'The Young Martyr' which hangs in Louvre, Paris.

Depicting the death of a young Christian martyr in the 3rd century A.D. during the reign of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, this painting was completed a year before his death in 1856. Le Jeune Martyre' has been called the 'Christian Ophelia' since it resembles Pre-Raphaelite artists portrayals of Ophelia from Shakespeare's Hamlet.
