I'm a calligrapher and prefer to write all correspondence with a Mont Blanc. In my opinion, it is THE BEST fountain pen ever made! Given the difference between the pound and the dollar, I think it's right at that price....around 275 American dollars.

The RSPB are currently doing a recruitment mailshot thingy. You get a window sticker and a free cardboard pen for sod all. You don't even have to join or owt. Open the envelope, pocket the goodies, chuck the other shite in the bin. Who gives a poo about penguins anyway? Cardboard pen! Ace. Works a treat and you can recycle it probably too. Hang on a few days and it'll come through the post. Spend your munny on sumfink else. I got a banjo.

Sheaffer make some really nice fountain pens, the range starts at around £40 and goes up to £1k. Make sure you can try it before you buy though, I am usually always disappointed in fountain pens, those really fine nylon tip pens always write a lot nicer.
Try your local high street stationery store.

I have the most beautiful Mont Blanc which my partner bought me for my birthday. It must have cost about that.
It is lovely to use and I recommend it highly.
Then you can buy the biro, and the pencil and the leather case and and and.....
Good quality and it says a lot about you.
