A bull mastiff is quite a handful of dog for inexperienced dog owners, whether they are good with kids or not! Also, that is a big dog to have around toddlers.
Do some research on breeds, try golden retriever, Labrador ret (although they tend to have a long puppyhood) or go to the local animal shelter and see the dogs who need good homes.

Try checking out www.americankennelclub.org and read up on the descriptions of the Bull Mastiff. I know that they are usually real nice dogs with a gentle disposition. But of course any dog can be a good family pet if raised right and trained correctly. The only thing that I would worry about with a Bull Mastiff is that they can get quite large and may knock over or step on your 1 1/2 year old, I would ensure if I got one to get one quite young so that it is smaller, and get the two of them accustomed to each other right away. I'm sure they'll end up best buds.

My cousin have bullmastiff and a Neapolitan Mastiff, and her 1 year old and the dogs are inseparable!

They way a dog is raised has more importance than breed.

The only thing you have keep in mind is the size of a bully, you will have to extra training time in to make sure the dog doesn't jump up on, or knock over your child. Big dogs aren't always aware of their size :)

Take Ara57's advice..... If you are not thoroughly familiar with the bullmastiff, don't get one. Get a dog smaller than a BM. And don't even consider a pit bull! If they've been bred for gentleness and companionship, why do we still see so many news articles about pit bull attacks... especially on children!

I bred bullmastiffs for 25 years. I KNOW.

Most of the time. There really is no breed that is bad with kids, except smaller breeds tend to be more nippy due to the fact they need to protect themselves from out of control kids. I dont know where people keep getting the idea that there are certain breeds that are bad with kids. Some dogs are bad with kids not some breeds.

bull mastiffs are good american bulldogs are better - youll probally drop your jaw on this but pitbulls regardless of their stereotype are wonderful dogs to be around kids - they have been bred to be unagressive towards people - I would suggest american bulldogs though, theyre at the top of my list - very similar to bull mastiffs but not quite as large males are usually around 110lbs. and females are usually around 75 lbs -
