Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Remove programs you don't use, and defragment your computer.

It's not clear what you are trying to clean up.

If you mean the hard drive all you have to do is to go through all the files you created and saved and either delete them if you no longer need/want them, or simply back the ones you don't ever access on a CD.

Then review all the programs in C:\Program Files or you can go to Start > Setting > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and delete those programs that you never use and/or simply don't need anymore.

Once you have your files cleaned out and you have cleaned out all the software you don't need, then run a defrag on your hard drive.
Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Defrag Hard Drive

Once you have that done, defrag your hard drive on a weekly basis as a minumum. Defrag using the Microsoft tool takes a few hours depending on the size of your hard drive and how defragmented it is. So usually it's best to launch the MS defrag utility on your PC and go to bed and leave the PC run through the night while defrag is being performed. It won't hurt anything to leave it run.

Hope this helps.

you can always defragment your computer and run antispyware and antivirus programs.... but honestly, a lot of the junk you have on there is too difficult to remove manually. That is why many people reformat their hard drives every once in a while. This cleans everything off and starts you over on a clean slate. The annoying part about doing that ... is you have to reinstall windows, the drivers for your devices, and all your software... if you do this make sure you back up the files you want to save first.

use this free scan to check for spyware ewido.net/en/onlinescan/
and also defrag your system.
This is how to defrag using win xp.

Begin by first clicking on the Start Button.

Then move your mouse over the All Programs icon to display all Start Menu folders.

If your Start Menu is set to the Classic View, move your mouse over the Programs folder instead.

Now, move your mouse onto the Accessories menu folder until it expands.

Then move your mouse onto the System Tools menu folder until it expands.

Now Click on the Disk Defragmenter icon to launch the program.

Then use your mouse to highlight the drive that you want to Defragment?

Then click on the Defragment button located on the lower left hand center of the screen.

Windows XP will analyze your drive first and then display a visual estimate of the final results.

And Windows XP will continually show you a progress indicator bar depicting its progress.

When Windows is finished it will ask you if you would like to quit the Defrag Program.

Select YES to quit the Disk Defragmenter Program and then reboot your computer.

Also, you could use one of many "cleaning" programmes, like CCleaner, which is a freeware and it will clean your registry etc. and make some extra disk space (without deleteing your important files,of course).
