Alright I have 5 month old 3/4 Akita, 1/8 chow, 1/8 German Shepard that I adopted from the pound, 3 weeks ago. He is a super sweet, very mellow dog. I run him in the mornings & kennel him while I go to work. And let him out the second I get home. From there we do errands & such together. Well He has now had 3 accidents since I got him. The last 2 times were when I got home & Took a bath (he had been let out!) I shut the door & he start crying I told him to go he left. When I got out he had left me presents. This happened twice so now I put him in his kennel when I take a bath. At night he sleeps right next to my bed. I really would rather not kennel him since he has to be in a kennel all day! Well last night 1/2 hour after I went to sleep he got up on my bed & peed all over it w/me IN IT. And he had just gone out to the bathroom 1 hour before it happened!!! I don't want to keep him in a kennel all day long!! But I can't have him doing this either any suggestions?

Since it is peed on, let him have it and you spend the night outside. After spending the night outside where the dog belongs, I bet you come up with a solution.

Don't punish him - puppies have no understanding or very limited understanding of being punished. They simply don't know that what they are doing is wrong so they don't connect that with the punishment they are receiving. The fact you are out all day is the problem - he isn't being toilet trained so is going whenever he feels the need and doesn't see anything wrong with it. Puppies also don't have as much control over their bladders as older dogs do and sometimes an hour is just long enough for them to need to go again. Are you sure he wasn't up on your bed trying to tell you he needed out, and coz you were asleep he's been stumped and had to go where he was standing?

You are going to have to reorganise your daily schedule better so that you have more time to spend with him. Or if not you perhaps a friend or relation with more spare time that can come and let him out and spend time with him. Bear in mind he IS a baby and he needs lots of attention. Being left in alone all day in a KENNEL of all places is not good for a puppy, I dont care what anyone says. A dog is a family pet and should not be kept outdoors.

I would ask around your circle of friends and relations and see if you can't pluck a few volunteers to help out when you're at work, coz this little pup is going to need trained and he can't do it by himself. This is a common problem, where people get a dog but don't stop to think that they won't be home for much of the day so the dog ultimately gets left in alone all day. Definitely ask around, I'm sure you must have someone who can lend a helping hand.

Good Luck!

He is probably fine. Just young. I have 5 dogs, 3 males/ 2 females. The youngest 2 always need to go out first. My older dogs do not have a problem. If you are going to let him sleep on your bed...I would make sure and take him out as late as you can and as early as you can. You can use a potty training pad on your bathroom floor, if necessary. Treat the urine stains with an enzymatic cleaner and buy a waterproof mattress cover. Look for a pattern in his accidents, but do not withhold water. Good Luck.

The house training process can be a long one. Just because he's 5 months old doesn't mean he's had 5 months of house training. Try tying him to the bed, dogs don't like to pee where they sleep. When he cried at the door during your bath and you dismissed him you told him that wether he cried or not you weren't going to let him out. So now he thinks, "why cry?" You need to re-enforce the whining, when you go to let him out, get him excited, stand at the door and talk to him, try to get him to bark or make a noise, when he does, let him out, he will eventually learn to bark and whine all the time to go out. But no matter how inconvenient for awhile, if he whines let him out!!!! Or you'll be fighting the house training forever.

Wash your sheets and spot clean your mattress then work on training your dog to sleep in its kennel. Once it's used to it, you can leave the door open so he can walk around if he wants but will be used to sleeping in the kennel and won't get up on your bed.

First...wash all your bedding! I am assuming you have scolded him (with a firm " No! Bad dog") when he gave you these presents? Is there a reason why don't you let him in the bathroom with you while you bath? He just wants to be with you. It take lots of time and patients to train any animal; dogs really just want our attention and to please us and I would not let him sleep with you, he needs his own bed and beside in the future if you decide to share your life with a human being, they might not appreciate your bed companion...lol. Good luck. ;)

This is definately a bad situaltion. Maybe if you build a bigger kennel you can get in there with him at night and if he leaves a "present" or until he doesn't your bed will be dry as toast.

give him a little time to settle, mine used to do that, she used to get so excited, its just trying to catch him before he does it too and quickly getting him to pee where you want him too.
He is in a new enviornment and it can take at least a few months not forgeting he is still a pup. Good Luck, he sounds like a cutie

You were doing all the right things all the way up until the last!

8 month old male Great Dane's schedule:

7:00 am- get let outside to potty (go out with him to make sure he pees and poos)

7:15 am- put food in the dish (taking meds, so make sure he eats)

7:30 am- let out again to pee if needs

7:45 am- go for a mile walk
8:05/8:10 am- return from walk and go outside again...stays while I get ready for work.

8:30 am- in crate (here is the scary part)

2:55/3:00pm- gets let out by son (returning from school)...yes the dog stays in the crate that long!

3:15 pm- gets let back into the house (unless already let in by son)
....has subervised run of the house unless we have to leave...If I have to shower or work out in the yard, in the crate he goes (or into our fenced back yard)...he does not get unsupervised run of the house!

4:30 pm- outside to potty again...by himself

5:30 pm- food put down (taking meds...has to eat)

7:30 pm (or so)- let out again

8:30-9:30 pm- allowed in bed while I watch tv or read

10:00 pm- let out again (watched to make sure he potties both)

10:30 pm- in crate for the night...if he whines in the middle of the night, I let him out to potty, then back in the crate until 7:00 the next morning.

only 2 accidents in the house...why?...I did not watch him...this goes for any age of dog!

Good luck with him!

take it outside until it goes piss. then bring him in. in about a hour take him out again to go. he'll learn to go outside when he has to pee. also remember that he is young and his bladder isnt quite fully "developed". have him sleep on his own bed but put plastic under it at night to.
