Doing crunches help strengthen your abs.
"Crunches, sometimes called a curl-up, is one of the most common exercises for the abdominal muscles, primarily the rectus abdominis. It is performed while lying face up on the floor with knees bent, by curling the shoulders up towards the pelvis. The hands may be placed behind the head, but care should be taken not to pull on the neck, as this can cause injury. Alternatively, the hands may be placed on the shoulders, with the forearms crossed over the chest."

Crunches are about half of a sit-up. Lay on your back with your knees up. Rest your hands behind your head and keep your elbows out (not in to your ears) as you use your stomach muscles to bring your shoulders and back about 6 inches from the floor. Pilates methods suggests breathing OUT as you contract your stomach muscles during a crunch. Because there are different groups of muscles in your stomach there are also different positions to do crunches to get the best benefit.
If you are lean, crunches will give you a six-pack, but if you are trying to lose weight and define your stomach, you will need to also add a cardio work out to your routine.

Crunches are like sit-ups, accept you only go up about halway. People can do more of these than sit-ups. And yes, crunches work your abdominal muscles, so they will help to develop a six-pack.

They are an exercise, modified version of sit-ups in order to get a flat, muscle bound stomach referred to as a "six-pack."

sit-ups that don't require you to go all the way up
You do them by lying on your back like you're doing a sit-up, but you just lean up and tighten your stomack muscles and hold it insteadof going all the way up. They hurt, but they will give you a six pack.
