WGA stands for Windows Genuine Advantage. Microsoft developed the WGA validation program to fight against piracy of its popular Windows OS software. Once installed on a PC, WGA is a small program which searches your computer to see if you have a valid/genuine license key. If it finds a valid license key then there is nothing to worry about and you can download all free Microsoft software. If it fails to find one, the program will alert you that you have an invalid license keys and urges you to purchase one. However, your copy of Windows will continue to work. Even if your computer fails the WGA validation process, you can still download all of Windows security patches. However, you will not be able to download any of Microsoft's free optional software, such as Internet Explorer 7, Windows Defender .NET Framework... - to name a few. However, there is a way around this problem. Read lifehacker.com article:

windows genuine advantage - it's microsoft's anti-piracy tool which checks for illegal product keys in windows xp then disables any installation of xp found to have an illegal product key - at least until a legal key is purchased.
you need a legal copy of windows to be able to download updates from microsoft which is probably why wga was mentioned in relation to your previous question - if wga says your installation of windows xp isn't legal you won't get updates until it is.
