As other people have answered, a simple, polite "Hey, would you mind chipping in for the gas since we're all going to the same place?"
Do you ride with those people in their cars? Maybe it evens out. But if you're the only one with a car, these people should not feel put out by the request.
If it's a short, once-in-a-while trip, I wouldn't ask. If it's all the time I would.
When I ride with a friend or family member, they never take gas money from me, but I always offer to pay for the parking (which can be more than the gas!).

I would approach it this way, If you are in a conversation with them all of a sudden change the subject like this, "yeah, and do you believe how much gas has gone up?"....."I can't believe it will go any higher" (If they say, yes it will then go with that, if they say I don't know then go with this).."If it keeps going up, I am going to have to buy a horse"...."Hey by the way, do you all have money for gas or do you want a horse too?"...If you don't like that line try, "Will you guys help me out with the gas for this gas hog?"
Give it a try.

open the conversation with.....that you appreciate being able to ride together but in order to share the expense of gas and wear on the automobile - perhaps you should carpool beginning on _____....
if it is that your car is the sole transportation interject that as much as you enjoy riding together to pick up and deliver another person at a different location is added expense and you would appreciate splitting the gas expense .... if is offended by this, was along for a free ride anyway - for anyone with any amount of concern knows in this day and time - there is expense

Pull in gas station with a full tank or empty tank and get out turn around, look at all your passengers and say, we need gas. Then say to them listen guys I can't figure this out myself this car must have a leak somewhere because it I keep having to put gas in it. Be witty your own way, make them laugh, be a friend first.

Just tell them right out the amount of gas these days and let them know you want a certain amount from them for gas and to keep up maintenance. This is fair and do not feel bad for asking them for it. Good luck!

when people dont have cars, they don't realize how expensive it is to run them. let them know "oh, man, i'm almost out of gas" "man, gas prices are really high" or "sorry, can't pick you up, i don't have enough gas or money to get any" if they are cool, they'll pick up the hints, and realize it takes money to have a car.
if they don't take the hints, just tell them "sorry, can't pick you up anymore, i just don't have the gas money." or "yeah, i'll pick you up, but you gotta pitch on gas, i just don't have the cash to cover you all the time." or even "i'll drive if you buy the coffee/burgers/movie tickets" its a fair trade.
their your friends, they'll help you out when they realize they're being freeloaders!

I use to tell my friends that I would love to hang out with them but I have no gas, so if they want to chip in for gas you will be more then happy to pick them up.

"Listen dude. We're all going out, and we're all having a good time. I have no problem driving you guys around, but I think it's fair for everyone to pay equal amounts and split the cost of gas, especially since prices are going up these days. Is that cool?"
