I'm going to be there for 2 weeks, on Maui the whole time. I'm a 34 yr old white guy.

Locals dress very casually. Many wear t-shirts and shorts w/running shoes or with flip-flops. Jeans are fine. Golf shirts, tank tops and aloha shirts are common too.

No designer clothes. No suits or sports coats. Don't wear socks with sandals. Don't wear outrageously colored clothing. Don't wear clothing of the same color/pattern as your mate/partner. Don't wear white zinc oxide on your nose.

Was there for the third time last December. It seems the "natives" dress pretty casually. Aloha shirts seem very natural, especially if you're wearing natural fibers and keeping cool. I would imagine the best way not to look like a tourist is avoid carrying a camera and map.

you could wear anything because maui is full of people moving here from the mainland. i'll tell you what not to wear though, loud aloha shirts. people here are like the mainlanders and they wear basically the same things so don't worry so much about sticking out like a sore thumb and just be yourself. you'll be amazed at how people dress around here and are very much alike where you come from. aloha, and enjoy your stay on maui!

You can occasionally wear an Aloha shirt but avoid "hawaii" t-shirts. Just dress comfortably like you would at home.. lots of sunscreen, and flipflops - everyone seems to wear flipflops =)

Have fun!

Last time I visited the easiest distiction for me was light skin = tourist. Tanned skin = Local.

This is the same in any beach resort I think.

I don't know about what not to wear, but don't drive a Sebring convertible. My wife and I were tourists, but we howled at all the other tourists driving them. You may as well carry a sign that says TOURIST.
