Before the Christian calendar, there was, and still is, a Jewish calendar. The Jewish calendar is based on a lunar year; the Christian calendar on a solar year. The crucifixion of Jesus took place during Passover and Christians use the Jewish calendar for the Easter holiday so it will be at approximately the same time as Passover.
Today's date on the Jewish calendar is 1 Cheshvan 5767
So as not to offend anyone, Bible scholars use the terms Before Common Era (BCE) and Common Era (CE) instead of B.C. and A.D. which are Christian terms.

12 month calendar was created by the romans changing their10 month calendar into a 12 month calendar, the two extra months were named after Augustus and Julius Caesar (August and July). There were other calendars, though the Mayan ones were considered to be the most advanced...
January: Janus, Two-faced God
February: ?
March: Mars, god of war
April: ?
May: Maia, a titaness
June: Juno, Queen of the gods
July: Julius Caesar
August: Augustus Caesar:
September - December: Translatesto 7th month, 8th month,9th month, and 10th month
Days of the week are also pagan in origin:
Sunday: Sunday
Monday: Moonday
Tuesday: Tuor's Day
Wednesday: Woden(Odin)'s Day
Thursday: Thor's Day
Friday: Frida(Freya)'s Day
Saturday: Saturn's Day
AD offends me only because it implys that Jesus is my lord, something that I do not believe is true...

From my memory of history I can only say that I think the Mayans first developed calenders. That might be a good place to start.

There have been many different calenders.
Jud 1:4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

There used to be ten months but the Romans added two which is why (Sept)ember is the ninth month instead of the seventh, (Oct)ober is the tenth month instead of the eighth etc.

That's part of the sometimes subtle Christian domination. Not the most important aspect, though. But it's serious, too.

Yes I can tell you. They have NOT always been the same. They're not the same even today.
