I've tried grooming my cocker spaniel and my shih-tzu. You need to buy grooming tools, (the good ones can be very expensive), and maybe a book on grooming. There are probably sites on grooming too. Make sure you have flour or styptic powder nearby to stop any bleeding, in case you nick the skin.

I personally wouldn't recommend it, my cockers fur was too thick for the sheers, and it overheated and wouldn't cut. And when I was done cutting my shih-tzu she looked like I had put her through the paper shredder.

Puppies move around a lot and can be afraid of the noise and feeling of the sheers. You can get frustrated very quickly. I know I did.

I would recommend you try a local pet store that does grooming, like PetSmart or Petco. I know that puppy cuts at PetSmart are only $15 until they're 5 or 6 months (you may want to double check the age).

I think that having it done professionally may not be as cost sufficient in the long run, (my shih-tzu costs about $50 each time now that she's almost 2) but the money is worth not having to deal with the hassle!

Either way, good luck!

I have a shipoo I cut allllllll the time. I use scissors and do it outside. I put him on the table out there and get him to lie down and just cut all the fur to one length. He looks like a puppy when I'm done! Don't cut too short, and be extra careful anywhere on the face. I get him to stand up to do the belly area.

I save a TON this way. It's super easy. If he won't calm down, give him a bolt of exercise before you start...like a few dozen rounds of fetch.

It's not as easy as it sounds ESPECIALLY with a puppy. They wriggle around and often bite at brushes. combs and scissors which you should avoid at all costs. Don't attempt this yourself unless you have done it before. If you make a botched job of it and hurt your dog, he will be aggressive and timid towards groomers his whole life.If you cut your dogs skin it will NEVER forgive you lol. I see this nearly every week, puppies that have had bad experiences at groomers do not make the most co operative of grooms. I strongly recommend you take your dog to a professional groomer. I try to dissuade owners from DIY grooming unless they have done it before and KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING.
