There are so many ways to hang things on walls today, it's amazing.
Mirrors: use silicone on the back of the mirror. You can easily scrape it off if you want to move the mirror
Pictures: hooks are good because they keep the picture from moving but velcro is also great. You can also use mounting tape. Whichever you choose: make sure you choose the right weight of tape or velcro or hook for what you are hanging
Shelves: brackets work quite well, but you can also use mounting tape if you won't be putting anything heavy on the wall
For drywall, make sure you use anchors and use them as well for cement walls. For wood, just use nails or screws.
Have fun!

You can use 'threaded drywall anchors', available at most hardware stores. Also known as "EZ-Ancor" or "Zip it".
I have used these and all you need is a screwdriver and possible a level if you will need to hang from two points.

You can buy a battery operated screwdriver, $ 15.00 at Walmart, then put Anchors and Screws in wall. Don't forget the batteries...

Yes, use the dry anchors, known as 'zipits'. That way you dont need to be to concerned about hitting solid wood behind the sheetrock. However, DO use discretion as to the weight of the objects you have in mind.
