I wonder if anyone could possibly get me out of the turmoil that I seem to be in.

I'd recently got the job in the bank & as per their next procedure of checking anyone's eligibility to work within the country; they needed my P45 along with my birth certificate or the passport. Now, after trying in vain finding my birth certificate, I couldn't locate it & hence had been using my passport instead for the purpose.

I've sent my passport to this bank by post only yesterday & by the time they check it & send it back it could get to me by next week or so.

Problem now is, this bank job would start from mid November, while in the mean time, rather than sitting at home getting bored, I've been offered a temporary job lasting ONLY 2 weeks, which I rather fancied doing. However, the agency would need to see my passport legally, to ensure the fact that I'm eligible to work.

I can arrange everything else however, but sadly, the NI card, full photo card Driving Licence, P45, utility bills, bank statement, etc. DOES NOT do. ONLY passport is required for the purpose.

Now, the agency need to see my passport by the end of this week (Friday, at the most) since I’m supposed to start this 2 weeks of temporary job by the coming Monday.

I’m just torn between what exactly to do now, as without the passport, I’m stuck as a pig. Don’t have the passport at the moment & hence can’t show it to the agency & without which, I can’t do the job that I’d adored to do.

At this moment in time, the only direction my stressed brain seems to be pointing me is towards Home Office, by asking them to fax me a letter confirming my eligibility to work, however, I’ve my doubts as whether they could possibly do it as quick as a flash.

Is there anyone around, who could possibly point me in the right direction, since any help at this rather desperate time would be greatly appreciated.

If the agency could at all possible accept your birth certificate, you can easily get a replacement from your local town hall for a small fee- and it would most probably be quicker than a home office letter as they can take ages to reply.

If they defintiely need your passport then I'm of no help, sorry.

There's no other way, but the visa or work permit on your passport. Yet, you could try asking the Immigration Department to send you a letter proving you have the right to work in the UK. Another way you can try is to give the agency your National Insurance Card or contact the Custom & Revenue Department to give you a letter of proving your right to work in the UK. If you haven't got a National Insurance Card yet, just neglect this method.
