I would not at that age. I used to joke that my son was depressed when he was a toddler and young child. He was, but I didn't know. He is now 13 and takes a mild antidepressant. He has done so for about 2 years. Mild chronic depression is what he is diagnoised with. Good luck and many prayers.

Antidepressants, NO. But cognitive behavioral therapy, teaching it to him at his own level, YES.

He also needs alot of Praise, instilling a very good self-image within him.

He needs to be taught self-acceptance.

Psychiatrists, and Anti-depressants - No.

Parents need to teach their children how to experience the joy(s) that life brings.

Take your child out alot. Outdoors, Camping, swimiming, etc. Do not allow him to stay indoors too much. When he/she is indoors, because he/she has to be, keep the house, whatever room he/she is in well lit up!

Do not judge him/her. Speak words of kindness, patience and love at all times to her/him.

Patience is the key. The child may also be intraverted, and that does not mean he or she is necesary depressed. You can really look into this further on your own as parents without going to Psychiatrists and without anti-depressants(they have way too many bad side effects, and do much internal harm to the internal organs of the body). I am not into Scientology.
A child is so easily given a name and title (which identifies this as who & what she is for life) because of some misunderstood behaviors, and it scars the child for life! Depression, Anxiety, ADD, Bipolar, Borderline Personality Disorder, etc, and the list goes on. And when the person has "learned" to overcome Much of the so called symptoms, - he or she is already scarred through life, criticized and judged harshly. They will always be identified as being such... These titles of who they now are, will go into relationships of all kinds. And they will not know how to behave in these relationships as a result. I have some cousins given these titles, put into a box, and suffer tramendously from it, and have a very difficult time functioning from the way others treat them - since they were identified this way.
All I can do is pray for them.

I know you love your child and will do what is best for your child.

I can't imagine a 3 year old being so depressed he would require medication. That is a process if began now would continue the rest of his life. Talk to him, seek counseling, find activities that would change his way of thinking. He is 3 years old and very impressionable, you have the ability to show him a different point of view. His depression is not set in stone, but will be if you decide to medicate so soon.

In my opinion, 3 year olds are too young to be on antidepressants. I would take the child to a doctor or psychologist, they should be able to help you out. Is your son lonely? Maybe set up a playdate.

Get your kid to a pediatric neurologist immediately. Kids that age don't get depressed unless there is a physical reason, usually neurological. The "depression" is a symptom of a larger problem. Don't administer any medicine without complete medical advice and that means an examination by a pediatrician who specializes in child psychiatry.

You need to find out what is causing his depression and work from there I think meds are just the wrong way to go I think that people and Dr's are just getting lazy and dont want to deal with there problems....Over medicating is a big problem in this world we live in it is just making the drug company's richer and the Dr's as well

Before giving the kid drugs take him to a clinic a psychiatrist can sit with him and find out what is wrong preferably one that has been working with children this way you can know for sure before you start giving a toddler some medications.

Has he been diagnosed depressed? wow I've never heard of such at that age. Are you sure he isn't just ill?Put fiber in his diet and see if he doesn't feel better. Children can not express themselves, so be careful with medications. How can they tell if he is depressed? Poor little guy. Best wishes.......

A 3 yr old should not be on anti-depressants. Where did you get the idea he was depressed?
