Seats on the emergency exit rows do tend to have at least a little more legroom; the FAA mandates that there be enough room to actually use the exit.

The seat rows immediately in front of an emergency exit row should be avoided if you can. Not only do you not get any extra room, but the seat recline mechanisms are usually deactivated, so a reclined seat cannot block the exit path. Note that on some airplanes, with two emergency exit rows close together, that the front emergency exit may have the recline mechanism deactivated, as those seat might block the escape path for the rear exit.

As far as having to actually use an emergency exit in a real emergency, no, I haven't. But I've used them plenty of times to get out onto the wing, as I'm a mechanic.

Operating them is pretty straightforward; you pull the handle in or down, and the door drops inward (if you're ever on the outside and push in on the latch release, the door is going to fall inside the airplane). Most weigh between 35 and 50 lbs. On shorter airplanes, ones not all that tall, like the Boeing 737, in a real emergency I'd throw the hatch out through the door opening, rather than leave it in the seat like the safety briefings say; why leave something in everyone else's way? On taller and larger airplanes, you may have an emergency escape slide that's going to fire off on the outside of the airplane, and throwing the hatch on it might not be such a good idea. In such a situation I'd hoist it over the seat in front of me and drop it there, provided of course that there's no one in the way.

Also, as long as the airplane is pressurized, there's no practical way of opening the exit. The pressurization loads on the door are way too high, and the mechanical leverage way too low, to make it possible to remove the hatch in flight. Besides, the doors are plug-type doors--they won't fit through the opening unless you pull it inside the airplane and turn it on its side.
