Sure, it is Southern Belle or not. This is the 21st century and it is about time you girls stepped uo and asked the boys out for a change, takes all the pressure off us! Just walk right up to one and smille sweetly and ask them Could we dance together? Don't worry if you get turned down, just ask the next one in line!

First off I'm not from the south.. actually Massachusetts/California so I might not understand how it would work.
Assuming I didn't give away my credibility in my first sentence... you CAN ask guys to dance. At first I thought you said "to a dance" would be slightly different if it was a formal event... although you would be better to ask the guy you want to go with than to wait it out. As far as just dancing, you shouldn't worry about asking because in the end you and the guy you ask will have a lot more fun than the people standing up against the wall. Be sure to use some tact... if you are concerned about what people think just be non-chalant in your actions and act as though it is natural. People won't remember that they are supposed to have their cultural expectations.

I live in the south as well and down here we ask the guys to dance and girls dance with girls as well. However I have never seen a boy dance with a boy unless it was in gay nature. So go ahead and ask the gentlemen to dance.

There's nothing wrong with a girl asking a guy out to the dance, but traditionally is is the other way around.

Yes! and if anyone makes you feel guilty, remember that Queen Victoria (reason for the proverbial Victorian Era) proposed to Prince Albert in 1840. Propriety is the decision of the bold.

ABSOLUTELY!!!!! Why not? just make sure that your intentions are simply that yuowant to dance and nothing more. You used the word proper...well...carry on the tradition of being proper....but these are different times...not the days of gone With the Wind.........perhaps chum up with another guy person and have him ask the guys to ask you to dandce...but that is the long way around! i say ASK THEM!!!

If you want to dance with someone, ask them. Why not. You'll never get anything you want in life, unless you ask for it. Don't wait for others to ask you, all your doing then is taking what happens to come along. And.... if the south doesn't like it, move up north. Yankees may be a little eisier to get along with. I've had girls & women ask me to dance with them before.
I was flattered, actually. It helps when a guy CAN dance. I could, and they liked that, I guess.
