Our bodies hic-cough because our diaphragms need oxygen. Most of the time if you take a few deep breaths deep into your lower lungs--abdomen, and hold each for a few seconds, your diaphragm will get oxygenated & the hic-coughs will go away. There is a condition (rare) where people do hic-cough constantly, sorry, don't know the name of it. good luck with 'em & try to laugh about it :D

For hiccups, I've always only done one thing, and it's worked perfectly for me:

Fill a normal-sized glass, such as an 8 oz (not a coffee cup or other shorter/smaller one) to at least halfway.

Pull a metal butterknife from your drawers (I've never tried it with plastic or something else... I don't know that it would work).

Put the spreading-end of the butterknife in the glass of water, so that the handle sticks out of the glass by a couple inches or so (the glass can't be too tall, or the knife won't stick out).

Position the glass and knife so that the knife handle presses against your forehead as you drink. Hold the knife in place as you begin to drink the water.

Drink all the water from the glass, not so fast that you choke of course... just a steady rate.

Your hiccups should be totally gone after that.

I've used that method for years, and never failed to eliminate hiccups when I get them. I can't honestly tell you what about it makes it so effective... It could be the metal of the knife as it comes into contact with the magnetic quality of your body, or it could be that you're drinking continuously for a minute, so it helps keep you from breathing (sometimes holding my breath has worked when I don't have a glass and a knife around........but it's not as quick, easy, or even effective)...

Or (and this is the most plausible to me) it could be that by having the knife in the glass, it forces your head back farther as you drink the last remaining gulps of water, and this allows your air passages to open more freely and stay open long enough to know they don't need to cause muscle contractions. I think hiccups happen when you're getting too little air, so by opening the pipes more as you tilt your head back and drink, it just allows a better flow.....

But, this is all just speculation. The only real truth in all this, at least as far as I'm concerned, is that a metal knife in a standard-sized glass is the most effective on-the-spot immediate cure for a bout of hiccups :) Try it next time! Hope it helps.

Good luck!

usually holding my breath for 30-60 mintues helps, sometimes I have to do that 2 or 3 times in a row. I get lightheaded for a minute or so but the hiccups stop.

Try holding your breath very tight, and making yourself believe you can't try to breath or you will drown (like you were under water) wait until it gets extremely difficult, then breathe, that always cures my hiccups.

By the way hiccups are caused from iregular movements in the diaphram, gas or nerves can cause that.

Take 5 sips water and hold your breath. If it doesn't stop have someone scare the pants out of you. (one guy had the hiccups for 10 years I'd hate to break his record)

My cure for hiccups is holding my breath for as much as I can. But really concentrating. If not take any wet thread and put it on your forehead.

This sounds strange, but usually works for me. With your right hand thumb and pointer finger, tightly squeeze the big knuckle of your left hand ring finger. Make sure you squeeze on the 2 sides of it. Hold the squeeze until you stop hiccuping. I think I read it in an acupuncture book.

Drink a glass of water upsidedown...works every time.
Get a full glass of water and put your mouth on the opposite side of the glass you would normally drink from. Lean forward and put your head down while lifting the glass and drinking. drink the whole glass and when you come back up they should be gone.

Here are some ways you could try:

1) I hold my breath and swallow. Works for me every time.

2) My husband rubs his earlobe while drinking a glass of water. Always works for him, but never works for me.

3) My co-worker says she drinks water from a glass upside down. Always works for her, but I've never tried it. Seems too complicated to me.

4) Have someone scare you when you least expect it. I've seen that work for some people, but it doesn't work for me.
