It might help a bit knowing when you're planning this. Some areas shut down for winter and others get going.
I'm assuming summer here, as your better half will be more romantically inclined if she doesn't have to bundle up.
Give Kingston a shot. It's a wonderful town. For something unique, you can stay at a bed and breakfast on a retired Canadian Coast Guard Ice Breaker http://www.marmuseum.ca/alexhenry.html , wander around Kingston's many sites, like Fort Henry http://www.forthenry.com/hospit.htm (try to get there for the Sunset Ceremony, it's not done on a regular basis, special dinners served in the Officers Mess, by period costumed staff, before the event get sold out early, so book ahead), the Pubs and cafes, anything on the water front or even take in a night time ghost walk tour ( done it, great way to learn your way around). The tour boats leaving the harbour(some are dinner cruises) take a nice route through the Islands. Rent some bikes to travel around town.
If it's winter you're after, then the resort that's continually voted best in Ontario may be what you're after, Deerhurst in Muskoka http://www.deerhurstresort.com/

The closest Southern California wine country I can think of is Temecula. Malibu has some really nice and very popular wineries. The Crystal Pier Hotel in San Diego (Pacific Beach) is convenient to nightlife. It's not actually a hotel, but a couple of dozen cabins built on top of the pier. You can hear the ocean all night long. Encinitas is a fun place to go to. They have a historic downtown and plenty of bars to enjoy. Northern San Diego County has several funky towns that are off the radar of most LA residents. Look into Cardiff-By-the-Sea, Leucadia and Olivenhain for cute inn's and B&B's. Santa Barbara is artsy, romantic, has nightlife and is easy to get to. Ojai has a cute downtown and is very artsy.

Down by Port Dover it's really nice. Also if you're looking for a city then London is good because it's big but not as big and busy as Toronto is. Turkey Point is also nice, but I don't really know all the hotels/cottages/whatever you want around there, but I'm sure there's some. Hope I helped, and have fun on your getaway!

I'd suggest the somewhere in the Bruce Peninsula, I was down that way a few weeks ago. The autumn colours are out in full. Make sure you fit in a hike on the Bruce Trail.
Here's the official tourism website for Bruce County.

How about Stratford? It's pretty romantic in a way, and lots of good theater off all kinds, if you like that sort of thing.
