You best bet would be a Toyota, since they are the leaders in Hybrid Technology.

80% of all hybrid vehicles on the road today are Toyota's.
57% of those are Prius's

You have to look how many miles you drive and if you drive mostly in the city. Basically hybrids are good for cab drivers. In the highway you can get better mileage with a gas car, and it is cheaper to buy.
I would buy a Ford Escape hybrid, but as I drive a lot of highway and manual one will be better.

I really like the Prius. I had one for about a month while on a business trip was great. I got the car on a full tank three weeks later I looked down and it was at 3/4 of a tank.....AWESOME
I wish I had one instead my gas sucking mercedes but I am to snobby to not have a three pointed star on my grill.

i agree with the Toyota fans. Toyota claims not to have had to do a battery change in the U.S. for normal use. i think that thy have had to change out for crash damage. call your current insurance co. for a quote before you do anything. although i am not a fan of VW, you should check out their diesels, its proven technology and gets 45+ mpg
