You should read both Old and New Testaments.

The Old Testament is a shadow of the New Testament. The first few books of the New Testament are still under the old laws.
There is so much prophecy in the Old Testament.

There are so many signs leading to the promise of Christ starting in Genesis. There are many types also, like Jonah and Joseph.
Without reading the Old Testament how can you understand the importance of Isac and Ishmael and what each inheritance means? Or what each inheritance is....how Ismael being born of a woman in bondage is like those who are still in bondage to sin and his inheritance is the sand(earthly) and Isac is the stars(or heaven). There is so much in the Old Testament that is important to salvation.

jnois2003,
If you are serious, read the New Testament, starting in the Gospels. And the 700 tons of questions that you will have may lead you to other scriptures in both the New Testament and the Old Testament.

I suggest that you thoroughly read the entire Bible..and when finished, read it again and again. Everytime you go back through...you learn and comprehend something new. The Old Testament describes the Old Laws and how Moses brought God's people out of bondage and slavery. The New testament enlightens us with the story of Jesus and his glorious blessings throughout the lands.

Both. They are both in the Bible and to have knowledge of the Old Testament helps in understanding the New Testament.

Good question. I recently was told that the Old Testament is more Jewish and the new testament is a modified version or less-Jewish. Read both just to be sure and find out for yourself.

Read both.
I read the Old Testament in the mornings and the New Testament before going to bed. There's no hard and fast rule. But read the Bible prayerfully.
May the good God bless you abundantly.

If you are going to read any of it, you should read it all. The New Testament makes references to the Old Testament a lot, and you should know where that is coming from. In my studies, I've discovered that all of it is untrue, but you should make up your mind for yourself.

You should read what the thirst for knowledge and enlightenment leads you to.

I prefer to focus on the NT with occasional visits to the OT. But that's just me. I have friends who LOVE Psalms and Proverbs and spend a LOT of time there.

Keep reading with an open mind and an open heart.

God bless you.

One reason we have the old testament is so that hopefully we will learn from the mistakes that those people made in that time, same as a history book.

According to the Bible itself at 2Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is inspired and beneficial. To read one part without the other is like choosing to read one half of a mystery book. But as you read please be patient. It is not all easy to understand. But remember like other books the Bible has a theme; which is that by means of his Kingdom God will Sanctify his name and bring all things in heaven and earth back in harmony with his purpose. Ephesians 1:9,10
