They just give you a little bag of pretzels or something and a drink.
The only real difference is that people stand in line for a long time because it's a free-for-all on seating. On your boarding pass you are either A, B or C depending on how early you got to the airport.
Then you just stand in line to try to get the best seat. They are often full or almost full. I really feel that it's no problem.

I always fly Southwest when I go on vacation. You can't beat the price. But what to expect:

1. Make sure to get there early as they abide by open seating. They set by class A, B & C - boarding in that order. If you have the availability go online to southwest.com and you can print out your boarding pass up to 24 hours before your flight.
2. You will not get meals. Depending on the length of your flight you might get a snack box with crackers and cookies. Shortly after you take off though there is a full drink service. You can purchase alcoholic beverages as well for $3-4.
3. To be honest, although I do use them all of the time, the flight attendants are by far the most cranky I have ever come across. I usually fly at least twice a year, and I think I have had 1 flight in the past 6 years that had a good flight attendant.
4. Also, be prepared for late take off. The past 4 trips I have taken have been delayed by 40 minutes or more. Not too big of a deal if you do not have connecting flights though.

Expect to get where you're going. Bring a snack and your own entertainment, ipod, dvd, laptop etc...

The staff are always nice. You pay for your own alcoholic drinks @$3-4.

Your 7th flight is free if you sign up for rapid rewards. It's free to sign up and so worth it!

The seats are somewhat comfortable but don't sit in the very last row as you are next to the toilet and the seat doesn't recline. For more legroom, try to get an emergency exit.

You can go online 24 hours before your flight time to "check in" and you will get a letter that entitles you to board in groups A, B or C. A boards first and so on. The sooner you check in, the more likely you are to get an A and a seat of your choice.

Planes are 3 seats on the left and 3 on the right.

I have done many short flights on Southwest, (no cross-country with them yet) and have no complaints. They're quick, efficient, and easy to deal with on-line. I have not ever had a bad experience with their personnel or their aircraft.

Yes, it's no frills, but when I want to enjoy the trip itself, I opt for ships and trains anyhow. When in the air, I prefer being in an aircraft operated and maintained by a company that is not in bankruptcy.

Good people, I have flown with them from Florida to Portland Or. I am a crew member myself and I realize they know professionally what their Job is..
They avoided bad weather at all times, made wonderfully landings and overall they are professional in every way...I will always consider it positive to fly with Southwest

Low prices and "no frills." They don't have assigned seats so if you care about where you sit, you should get there early. They don't serve meals on most flights, but give you like a bag of peanuts and one soft drink.
