Besides cost, what is the benefit of home hair coloring versus going to a salon?

It is only cheaper. However you can take a easy and less risky chance by using a rinse color. Sally's sell variaties of colors to choose from and they wash out within a couple of washes. I use one especially which is less than $4 and it only makes my red brighter and it also makes my hair grow. They are in small pink and red packages... cannot remember the name of the brand, but all you need is a small bowl and a applicator brush... and 20 minutes of time. It is so easy and I have had great results.

I would never recommend at home hair color, but if you do try it, you could try a semi-permanent color such as the Clairol Natural Instincts line, these colors will blend your gray and are not too harsh on your hair because they are ammonia free. Be very careful with over the counter hair color though, some contain metallic dyes and other ingredients that are horrible for the hair. You may also want to check with your salon and see what the price is for a regrowth touch-up, as this would not be as expensive as the all over color you received before. Good luck!

nothing really. it's just cheaper to color your hair at home, but it takes a lot of practice to get the color evenly spread into your hair. also coloring your hair at home is more damaging than going to a salon because some salons offer treatments to make the coloring process less damaging to your hair. plus it's just easier to go to a salon. but hey no worries, a lot of my friends still color their hair at home and it looks great.

at home, you can decide how long to keep it in (so it doesn't go dry) and you can choose different colors that a salon might not have. and like you said, going to the salon is way expensive.

besides cost, another benefit would be not having to tke risk of letting other people messing up your hair. I don't quite trust salons, for most of the time, they don't match your expectations.

I use Garnier Nutrisse Cream, which I think it is the best hair color that I have ever tried. However, I have my hairdresser apply it for me. Occassionally, I do it at home if I do not have time to go to my hair dresser. One advantage of doing it at home is that you are not seen by others while you have hair color on your head. I hate that site of me.
