I have 5 pets. 4 of them are microchipped. (2 cats and 2 outdoor dogs) The dog that isn't is an indoor pooch, but I'm considering getting her chipped for the peace of mind... Is it worth it?

I was on vacation and my parents where watching my dog. Well... long story short he got away from my dad the day before I came home. I was heartbroken but my father was worse. We did find him but if it wasn't for the chip I'm not sure we would have.
A friend of mine had a crapy girlfriend who tried to claim his dog was really hers (after she found out he was worth a lot of $) They ended up in court. His vet came with a scanner... she got 6mo in jail... because of the chip.
All my animals are micro chipped. If I had kids they would be too.

You're assumming that the lost pet will even be scanned if it's picked up. Chipping your pet around here is pretty much useless. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the chips. All of my livestock are microchipped, however where I live, I seem to be the only person with a reader. After all, they're not cheap. If your pet winds up in the shelter in my neck of the woods (and in many other rural shelters across the US) he's SOL unless you actually come out and see him. My dogs have the ranch name tattooed in their right ear (well, not my Chihuahua, but he never goes anywhere without me). Where I live, it does more good than a chip that no one has a reader for. I'm waiting for the day when they finally get the microchips with GPS tracking on the market. Digital Angel is experimenting with it now, looks like they'll hit the market at around $200 a chip.

I would do it. You never know if a careless visitor might let your pooch out on accident and it's a good way to find your dog if this happens.

Around here, the vets have to charge a healthy sum for microchipping ($50), but I recently attended a pet expo where the humane society was there offering it for only $10. So if you are going to do it, you might see if your local shelter does it for less or will be doing it at a local pet supplies store any time in the near future.

YES! An indoor dog can get outdoors by accident or other means. I have two indoor cats and they are both microchipped. It isn't that expensive and it really does give you peace of mind that if somehow your pet was to get outside and get lost you will have a much better chance of finding it.

In my opinion most peopl who find a loose dog don't think about it being microchiped. Most people just look for a dog tag. And don't bother with anything else. If it makes you feel better I would just do it but get a name tag too and even put on it that your dog is microchipped so people will know as soon as they look at the tag. I have two inside dogs and they have gotten loose before, you never know what might happen. I hope this helps, good luck.

Indoor dog or not, I would absolutely get her chipped! It really is cheap compared to the other costs of being a pet owner. Not only that, isn't she worth it? Consider what you would lose if she got away!

You do take her outside for a significant amount of playtime and to go for walks every day...right? Chip her!

Good luck!

Yes, it would be a good idea indoor or not because there is always the chance that it could escape or runaway from the house and it would be helpful in recovering a lost animal if it's microchipped.

Micro-chip only those animals you wish to see again.
An inside dog usually goes outside to do its business, and can run away, dart out in front of a car, get kidnapped, stolen from your car, or you can be tackled in the park and relieved of your pooch. Print on the tag that it is chipped, so would-be thieves will not bother.
I think micro-shipping kids is a grand idea, since kidnappers and abusers would think twice. I like the idea of a child with a bumper-sticker on his butt that says- "I have a gun and know how to use it. Piss off!"

The peace of mind is worth the $20.00 I paid to have our indoor dog microchipped.
