I've been hearing a lot of good things about a low glycemic diet. No processed sugars or flours. Whole wheat breads, and noodles, lots of veggies, and low fat meats. Sounds easy and maybe pretty tasty. I think the trick is to try and not give yourself to much grief if you fail every once in awhile. I've been trying myself, but sometimes I hear Hershey's calling my name.

If you are serious, here's what you need to do. Quit BUYING bad food. Stay away from BK, McD's and Wendys. Start with simple meals that you know you can make. Pasta with sauce and veggies. Breakfast should no longer be bacon and eggs. Try Cheerios or oatmeal. Better yet, instead of a chocolate bar for a morning snack, get some microwave oatmeal. My fav is the Cinnamon Bun type. It's nutritious, has a good bit of fiber, and tastes great to boot.

If you can't live without chocolate, get semisweet chocolate bars. Most higher end grocery stores have at least two or three varieties. The higher the cocoa percentage the better it is for you as well.

Don't buy tofu and eat it raw thinking you will learn to like it. If you have access to a chinese market, buy smoked tofu and slice it into a sandwich instead of ham. You'd never know the difference.

Leafy greens are always a good choice.
So are lentils. I love lentils and rice. The lentils cook as easily as rice, and they are protein and fiber rich. So are all other beans. If you want a REALLY tasty treat, try falafel. You'll find this in the Middle Eastern section or the Jewish section of most grocery stores. Follow the directions on how to make them and eat them in a pita pocket with sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce and hummus. Make sure the hummus has some spice to it. I recommend Tribe of 2 Sheiks' Forty Spice variety.

Food habbits are the hardest to change. Best thing to do is read everything before you buy it, even though some times might cost more they might be more benifical to you over all. Tea is perfect to help you as well read any article on tea and drink 4 cups of that instead of coffee. Sugar is your call don't cause your body to freak out over having nothing dont compleatly cut sugar out.

Cutting down is a lot easier than cutting out. Moderation and portion control are your best bets. Look up the food pyramid. You can have almost any food, say a rich dessert once a week, still be very healthy, not gain any weight, and not end up feel deprived.

It's great you want to start eating healthier!

My advice: everything in moderation. Don't cut out all sugars or carbs, or you'll end up craving them and feel guilty when you slip up and have that bite of chocolate or box of doughnuts.

Take it slowly, and be creative. Cutting yourself off from foods that you love is a guaranteed way to feel deprived and start binging, so rather than eliminating them completely, look for healthier alternatives that still satisfy your cravings. Don't be afraid to experiment!
