Halloween is actually like Christmas Eve. The night before a Christian holy day.

It is the eve of All Saint's Day or All Hallows Eve or Halloween.

But just like Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent), Halloween has taken on a life of its own.

Catholic Christians love to have fun, laugh, and celebrate. As believers in Jesus Christ, we are not afraid of death, demons, ghosts, the devil or evil. In the light of the Resurrection, we can confidently laugh in the face of death.

With love in Christ.

In 835, Pope Gregory IV moved the celebration for all the martyrs (later all saints) from May 13 to November 1. The night before became known as All Hallow’s Even or “holy evening.” Eventually the name was shortened to the current Halloween. On November 2, the Church celebrates All Souls Day.

The purpose of these feasts is to remember those who have died, whether they are officially recognized by the Church as saints or not. It is a celebration of the “communion of saints,” which reminds us that the Church is not bound by space or time.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church says that through the communion of saints “a perennial link of charity exists between the faithful who have already reached their heavenly home, those who are expiating their sins in purgatory and those who are still pilgrims on earth. Between them there is, too, an abundant exchange of all good things” (#1475).

There is no official teaching. I grew up Roman Catholic and am a practicing Catholic. We always participated in halloween, as did my mother, who grew up in VAtican 1. The day after halloween is All Souls day, and the day after that is All Saints day. There are masses that you go to, but there is no official thinking on not participating in halloween.

Catholic kids are encouraged to be kids, to have fun dressing up, enjoy the candy and festivities, but always remember who they really belong to.
