The lie detector test is a tool to measure deceptiveness. You must understand though that although a polygraph test cannot be used against you or even brought into court, the same doesn't hold true with a police exam. The smallest hint of being deceptive will wash you out of the running in a heartbeat. There is no contesting it either. This is how departments decide who'll be the best candidate. No hint of untruthfulness may get you in. Any sign of it will knock you out of the running.
You would be wise to admit to any and all drug use. In most cases they'll go right down the list of narcotics. Its true also. Cocaine use...especially as recent as a few years, will deep six you.

Here is the deal... Every police department will have different criteria for hiring. They will have to follow the state minimum requirements, but can have more stringent requirements.

Drug usage is usually a department by department decision. IF you have done some type of inhalant, most departments will over look it, if it has been several years and you do not have any other type of drug usage.

The main thing on a polygraph is to be honest. If you sniffed paint, smoked a joint, whatever...just tell them. Don't try to "beat the system". A department will more than likely overlook the drug usage, but WILL not overlook you lying about it!!!!

The key to the lie detector test is being truthful. I have a friend who is a cop and admitted to doing acid and he got the job. If you lie they will not take you.

I have passed many lie detector tests in my lifetime. It's very simple. You must keep a mindset of being very confident about nobody figuring out. If you loose confidence you will begin to get nervous and the polygraph can pick it up. Try taking a xanax or other anti-anxiety medication to avoid a nervous reaction.

it is a mixed, you should not lie, since the people who know you lied can use that to black mail you latter.

But some departments will not hire you if you have ever done any drugs what so ever.

Best bet is to be honest but apply to dozens and dozens of departments till you find one that will hire you

the point of the lie detecter test is to better understand what kind of person they are dealing with. being a police officer is a large responsibility. if your "friend" is not sure, he or she has already made the decision. it is a you do or you dont deal. no in between.
