You can add just about anything you desire.
Instead of buying bought spaghetti sauces, buy a can of Manwich which has more ingredients than the spaghetti sauces. Much better flavor.
I add sauteed onions, mushrooms, HB meat . Then I add whatever spices in my cabinet such as Italian seasoning,
soul food seasoning, garlic powder or garlic salt, and my secret ingredients of worcheshire sauce, 57 sauce and A1 sauce. This give it that delicious flavor, if that is too spicy, add just a pinch of sugar.
Make sure you cook it slow and as long as you can.
Also when cooking your noodles put a little vegetable oil and your noodles won't stick.
All my family and friend just love this recipe.

Oh, man! This is easy! Slice mushrooms and chop onions and sautee them in olive oil and crushed garlic. Add them to the sauce and bring to a boil. Let it cook down a little to make the sauce thicker.
I hate adding ground beef because it's usually too fatty, but if you want to add some meat-like texture, get some Boca crumbles or Veggie Ground Round or GimmieLean. This is low fat protein. All you need to do is add it to the mushroom sautee and stir it around for a bit, then throw it in the sauce. May need some salt, but you will love this.

Sounds good but I would not use the cheese and I agree with your mom if you are going to eat spaghetti do not use jar sauce. I use ground beef, fresh onions, bell peppers, celery, and garlic, canned stewed italian style tomatoes, a can of Rotel and about 30 minutes before it is done I add some fresh sliced mushrooms.

I normally stir fry garlic slivers in olive oil with a whole red/green chilli til the garlic is flushed light pink, then add the sauce and allow it to simmer 4 5 mins.
Also a good grinding of black pepper over the sauce with a handful of fresh chopped herbs makes a huge difference.
Hope this helps!

Here are a number of additives that I love:
- Oregeno
- Garlic Pepper
- Freshly ground salt - not too much though
- Tabasco - for a nice little kick
- And fresh tomatoes and mushrooms
- Also add some hamburger to the sauce and let it marinate over night in it - then brown it - mmm

Use crushed or stewed tomatoes with onions, mushrooms, carrots added. Or you can add them separately yourself.
Add 1 tblsp of oregano, garlic, onion powder, basil, and a little sugar if you add extra tomatoes, it cuts down on the sourness of tomatoes.
I also usually add 1 can of petite-diced tomatoes.
Then, I usually add a little brandy or red wine with about 1/4 cup olive oil.
Just mix and match until you get the flavor you like. I never use store-bought sauce unless I am in a jam.

I asked a similar question here months ago and it received very similar answers. However, the most original answer I received is the one I still use: green olive brine!
I usually add sauteed onions and garlic, sliced or chopped black olives, a small amount of seasoned ground beef, and a tablespoon-or-so of cream cheese. And, finally, the piece de resistance is a splash of the brine in a green olive jar. It gives it a wonderful flavor -- a "what could this be" ingredient that has everyone asking!
Enjoy!

If you use dried Italian seasonings, make sure to simmer the sauce for a little while to "wake" the flavors up. If you use fresh herbs, add them in the last minute of cooking the sauc. A good addition would be Italian sausage that you have taken out of its' casing and browned. Drain on paper towels if you would like a little less fat in your sauce.

Grape jelly?! I'll have to try that.
I always cook up a pound of ground beef, then add the sauce, and add seasoning salt or Italian seasoning; take a palm full of oregano and grind it up between my palms and sprinkle it in the pan. Garlic, whether it be salt, minced, or big clove chunks, whatever. And some basil and pepper is good, too.

the grape jelly is one i have yet to try. but to spice up the regular sauce, you always can add any veggies you like but for the basic sauce get a little olive oil & saute onion & garlic & add oregano & i also add one i buy called italian spices. also I am the opposite about sauces not being sweet. I think they are too sweet so after I saute the onion, garlic & spices, I like to add a can of either tomato sauce or paste. then I add the spagetti sauce & any meat i choose & if I add other veggies I would saute them when I saute the garlic& onion
