One factor that makes chickens grow is the breeding of meat chickens. I have raised little banty chickens and some larger ones for eggs, or it used to be for eggs. I'd let the hens set on their eggs and the chicks were raised by their Moms. Now my hens are old and don't lay or hatch anymore.

Some one gave me some chicks their neighbor had gotten and not taken care of some years back. When they got to be about 16 weeks of age, they were larger, over double what my adult chickens were in size and weight. Around that time, they became unable to walk. I did not know why, so I called a friend who raised chickens for meat. She came over and looked at them and told me that they were Cornish Cross. It is "normal" for these chickens to not be able to walk from that time on. They eat, grow, develop fast and then they are slaughered. I tried moving them throughout the day for a few weeks to make sure they ate, drank, stayed out of the direct sun, etc., but I had to find someone to take them for slaughter. Maybe turkeys are bred that way too. There are special feeds for fryers and other meat birds.

I live in Montana and lots of people still raise their own meat animals or hunt. I don't eat animals, but it is easier to understand the process when people have some kind of involvement other than just "consuming".

If you look into what is put into animal feed, it is downright scary. Animals from factory farms are kind of freaks of nature and nurture.

Free range chickens eat seeds and crap like that.

The other 99.99999% eat whatever the farmer can force feed down its throat. They of course also eat the feces of the birds stuffed into a cage above them. Not that they want to.. but you try to avoid eating it when you have 75 birds in a five 2'x2' cages above you.

Arsenic. I seen this on like dateline or something a few years ago. That's what the black stuff is around the bones of chickens.
