That's waay too direct. I saw this fellow on the Internet. It was a product testimonial that mentions his company, etc. He seems nice and very well put together.

Direct is certainly true. Perhaps you can strike up a conversation about the product to start with...and slip in a question like "does your girlfriend use this?" or "is this something your girlfriend would consider?"

I have no idea what the product is (for all I know it could be axle grease) but the general idea is to work that angle into the conversation. It's non-threatening and will certainly answer the question. If the answer is "I don't have a girlfriend at this time." then you can open that door and walk right on through!
