Alot of folks will tell you to go with a 20gauge or even a 28gauge. Personally, though, I'm gonna say go with the 12gauge.

The reason being that, most likely, if you are asking this question, you don't have a shotgun. The shotgun is the most versitile firearm in the world. You can use a light load and efficiently kill ground squirrels, dove, quail, squirrels, and just about any other small critter with minimal damage to the meat.
Medium loads are quite efficient for ducks, pheasant, rabbits, swamp rabbits, chukar. Heavy loads for turkey, geese, and home defense. Slugs with or without a rifled barrel can take anything from deer to elephants.

Myself, I use a Benelli SuperNova 12gauge for everything. Squirrel, rabbits, turkeys, ducks, quail, pheasant, chukar...the list goes on.

Remember, it's alot easier to find a load that is light enough, than one that is heavy enough. Besides, a mom-n-pop shop will always have 12gauge...besides, more shot allows you to fudge a little!

If you over 18 almost a lot of places can help you. If you really don't know what your looking for you can go to cabelos or acadamy or another sporting good store and the yshould have staff that can help you make a good descision. A 20 or 12 gauge would be a good bye for quail hunting.
