We don't. Praying is a ritual. In my mind it should be done to give thanks, recognition, appreciation....not to pray for "things."

I'm not sure I follow you. There's not enough time in the day to "pray for everything." I devote more time to prayer than most. But most of my prayer is thanksgiving and praise. Not petition (that is asking for something.)
I know wonderful things that happen to people who don't even believe in prayer. But that doesn't mean it isn't a gift from God who loves them anyway.
I think what you're thinking of is the "mystic." A mystic sees the work of God in all things. Trees, cars, people. Buy a mystic a cup of coffee and they will find God in it.
That may seem simple. But I find it quite lovely. True mystics are rare.

Good things WILL happen if I don't pray.
To me, prayer itself is a good thing. As far as good things go: do you have the ability to give thanks in general? Do you have to use the word "thanks" in order to acknowledge a good thing?
And, don't you suppose that your question is more general than just applying to Christians? Or, do you think that Christians are the only ones who pray?
Thanks for the question.

Listen, no matter how much we pray, God is not going to change his mind. If we pray to go kill someone he will always say no, but he won't stop us from killing someone. (Bad example, but it works) If he is going to bless us it's because he wants to and not because we prayed a certain amount of times to get it.
Basically, we pray to know God's will and follow it. We pray to give thanks for the good and the bad. We pray to keep in touch with our celestial Dad!

I'm not a Christian but a Trainianist who believes that prayer isn't just for good things to happen, but to say "Howdy" to god and her angels, Lucy and Vera. When are you non believers going to understand that?

How can you be sure that the prayer didn't cause it? How can you be sure that God didn't cause everything...He/she may even have caused the big bang theory. Every belief has its good points, bad points, contradictions, and unanswerable questions. That is why you need to be more open minded. ;)

James 5:16
Confess your faults one to another, that you may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
God is faithful and is good, all good things come from God.
How can good come from evil? There is no good thing that comes from satan.

prayer is an act of worship and praise. prayer is talking to God. the blessings, or "good things", happen to everyone everyday. they are both great and small. God loves His children. therefore, of course, good things will happen. and, of course, it's because of prayer. prayer is one of our greatest acts of love for God. so, well, actually, it's all because of love, which we show through prayer, talking to God. God Bless You and Yours! :)
