It says in the bible to give 10% of your earnings to God, not to a religion. Giving your money to a church of your choice is a good thing (most of the time). I'll admit - I've been to churches that did not use the tithes properly, but I've also been to churches that used the money for ministry. Churches do not receive much income outside of what they receive from tithes and offerings. How else are they supposed to fund an outreach ministry to minister to others?

Not sure why you can't give directly in Jesus name to someone badly in need.

Tithing isn't giving money to a particular religion. It's giving back to God in thanks by giving Him the first 10%. You can give it to a church, to a charity, or wherever else you feel led to do so.
It sounds like a scam, but it's Biblical. I challenge you to search an online Bible and see if you can find information on it. I don't think the word "tithe" is used specifically in most translations, but you can find stuff about putting God first and how He'll then take care of all of your wants and needs. That's for me! I've tithed all year this year for the first time, and you wouldn't believe all of the good stuff that keeps happening to me and my family in the areas of finance. Coincidence? Maybe. But maybe it's God keeping his promise.
We live better on 90% that's blessed by God than we did by living on 100% that wasn't. By giving 10% to God first and then saving another 10% and living off the rest, we have our spending under control, our bills are paid off (no car payments, no credit cards, and no mortgage), and our kids will be well taken care of when college time rolls around. Plus I've gotten to watch what my church has done with some of the money. It's incredible to know that I'm part of it all.
Have a blessed day, my friend! Maybe having you post this question is God's way of trying to reach out to you. There, I said it. Now little things everywhere will start to make you wonder if God isn't chasing you, trying to get your attention. Guess what? Maybe He is! Stop and listen, and you might hear Him. :-)

You are correct that the Biblical tithe was always FOOD from crops and animals. Church leaders changed the definition around 1870 from FOOD to income. During Biblical tithes, they did if fact have money. The Temple Tax (tribute in KJV) HAD to be paid with MONEY, but the tithe could NOT be paid with money. Tithing on one's income just shows how satan has influenced the modern-day corporate-run business we call a church.

it is really a scam because it is not biblical nor scriptural. the tithes mentioned in the old testament meant only for the Jews and not the Christians today.Pastors today use God to trick people in the congregations to pay for their(Pastors) food, water bills and even for the payment for the installment of luxury cars and mansions. and even for their hotels and resorts. read your bibles and you will see the truth about tithing. money is not mentioned used as tithing in Moses time.

The whole religion thing is a scam...
So, this god that that many delusional people are ranting on about, even knew how to fax over tax rate tables for the so called prophets (lunartics) to write in to the so called 'holy' book
I think not... man made up these "reasonable" tax rates to suit his own end.. ie... money = power = control over the masses !

Yes, it's a scam now. Thithing was a part of the Law God gave to Moses. When Jesus died, the Law was no longer in force, which includes thithing. Ministers will not tell their members that because they want them to think they are under divine obligation to give the ministers their money.

Why not have unpaid ministers that have a full time job not related to religion. Why do we even need organized religion? Can't we have a close relationship with god with-out religion?

Right. Churches should not have electricity, or running water, unless the utility companies give it to them for FREE. Preachers should not get a dime for their work. Churches should print their own money to sponsor activities. Utopians are so goofy.
