I use this medication because it helps me sleep through the night. My doctor wont give me any other type of sleeping pills. Since taking this drug my memory has been very sluggish or I get total blockage of things and people that I should easily be able to recall. The decline in my memory skills started when I began this medication. 30 mg for 3 years and sluggish poor memory. Has anyone else noticed this side effect? This is very trouble some for me. I'm introducing a friend to someone and I've forgotten the friends name. Meal preparation is slower because it takes me longer to remember what is the next step. I have to constantly retrace my steps trying to figure out what was it that I needed in this room. I'm frustrated and want to quit this drug but I dont know what to substitute in its place because without it I cant sleep through the night. Can anyone offer me their suggestion.
Thankyou I'm very grateful.

Yea... any kind of sleeping med such as amitriptyline or trazedone will effect your memory. It did mine too. You could ask for Trazedone.... it basically is amytriptyline, but you wont gain weight like you do with that. I got off it and substituted trazedone for it... then I went to get off that and used Tylenol PM ONE FULL TABLET at night and have gradually kept cutting down one tablet till Im taking about 1/3 of the tablet and thats where Im at right now. Tylenol pm is non habit forming and I dont have the memory issues as much anymore. Good luck... Its hard to get memory back... Just gotta work at it.

Amitryptyline is supposed to be for short term use only!!!! You need to find a sleep specialist, like a neurologist or even a psychiatrist, have them help you TAPER off the amitriptyline, there are many new medications that can aid sleep that are not habit forming and have few side effects, but the amitriptyline taken over time, as you have learned, causes some pretty serious mental issues. Might consider finding a new doc, one who knows more about medications.
