How does membrane filters kill bacteria & virus in drinking water?

the idea is to use the membrane to act like an extremely fine filter to create drinkable water. the pores are large enough to let the water molecules pass, but the bacteria are too large to get through

It doesn't kill them, it just physically removes them.
