Marinara isn't cooked as long so it is thinner, and it can be bit spicey. It's just a simple, quick sauce without a lot of fussy ingredients. It has more a fresh tomato taste instead of a long cooked tomato taste.
Add a can of chopped tomatoes with the juice, a splash of red wine and some red pepper flakes (about 1/2 teaspoon) some oregano and simmer for about 15 minutes. You'll have a good substitute for Marinara.

It's the same! Spaghetti sauce *IS* marinara sauce. Most of us have a different opinion on what marinara should be, just as we all think of spaghetti sauce differently. Just look to the dictionary: "made with tomatoes, onions, garlic, and spices." What spaghetti sauce isn't made with those things? :o)

In the U.S., marinara sauce is regular tomato-based spaghetti sauce seasoned with garlic and herbs and containing no meat. check the wikipedia link below. In Italy, it is a red sauce used for seafood sauce, thus its name (marine= ocean or sea)

I'd go ahead and use it. Especially if you are in a pinch. Sometimes I use canned sauce and just add some more of my own seasonings to it.

I think marinara may be a little thinner, and no veggie pieces, more seasonings, I believe.
