I actually think the Star Wars trilogy (the original one!!) is a perfect allegory for self-discovery, believing in yourself, choosing good over evil, goodness prevails, etc. Like most stories that follow the "hero" format, there is a quest involved. Luke must go on a journey that starts out being about destroying the Death Star, helping Jedi knights prevail over the Empire, etc. but it becomes about Luke finding out that he has the force and learning how to use the force for good- it's sort of an intergalactic coming-of-age story. I mean, one minute he's an orphan farm boy living with his aunt and uncle, and the next thing you know, he's in training to be a Jedi knight and defeat Darth Vader and the Empire with the talents he possessed all along. It sort of parallels Wizard of Oz, or any other hero myth. Don't feel weird- I actually think that about Super Mario Bros. too. Now THAT's weird!!!!

Star Wars has a lot of common mythological themes.
There are actually a lot of people who claim Jedi as a religion.
More of a Trekkie myself.
